January 2017

Welcome to 2017

Dear ,

This year, the sky’s the limit. Sky Scout—our drone program to capture Australia’s deforestation crisis—is officially off the ground! With your help, we’ve already secured three drones to help us expose destructive broadscale land clearing in a bid to fix the laws. From here, every dollar raised allows us to show our drones’ footage to more people.

In 2017, we’ll be fighting for 400,000 hectares of beautiful, protected forest which the Tasmanian Government wants to open up to logging—despite the protests of the Tasmanian logging industry. We’ll continue working to deliver protection for the forests of eastern Victoria.

Also, we’ll be building on the successful campaign to protect the whales of the Great Australian Bight from the threat of oil drilling, following our historic campaign win which convinced BP to leave the Bight in peace. But Chevron is next in line to put our pristine southern oceans at risk.

To achieve all of this, we will need you and all our supporters to be an active and engaged community—so please consider joining The Wilderness Society’s Movement For Life program. Through the program, you will get the training and resources needed to become a champion for the wild in your very own neighbourhood.

Yours for nature,

Lyndon Schneiders
National Director, The Wilderness Society

P.S. Our drones are ready to soar, but now we need to get the footage out there. From today, every additional dollar Sky Scout raises will be used to ensure more people see our drone footage. Thank you, friends! We're going to make this count.

Tell our Prime Minister to protect the Bight for good

BP is out of the Great Australian Bight, but it isn’t the only oil giant with a lease to explore there.

Our next big goal is to ensure this unique and vital stretch of ocean gets the protection it deserves; that’s why we’re calling on the Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to rescind ALL oil and gas exploration leases in the pristine Bight.

Donate to Stop Mass Deforestation

You've already helped us get three drones off the ground. Now help us put the worst land clearing on the air. Most Australians have no idea that one of the world’s worst deforestation fronts is right here on our doorstep. Sky Scout is our big plan to put this crisis on the national radar. Watch this

In Queensland, an MCG-sized area of native bush is cleared every three minutes. Most Australians don’t think of Australia when they think of mass deforestation. Until they see it for themselves. This is a crisis. And this is our idea to put it on the national radar. Watch now

Have you heard?

Five small islands disappeared in 2016

These five small, uninhabited Pacific islands disappeared because of rising sea levels in the Solomon Islands; researchers believe this is the first scientific confirmation of the impact of climate change on coastlines in the Pacific.

Reasons to be optimistic about our climate future

Climate change optimism is justified—a complete transition from carbon to solar and wind power looks practical and affordable within a generation.
