Because of its extraordinary cultural and natural values, Tasmania's Wilderness World Heritage Area is rated first among all World Heritage sites on Earth.
Yet even this greatest of natural wonders isn’t safe.
Reckless developments are threatening Tasmania’s globally unique World Heritage. Endangered species, fragile ecosystems and at least 35,000 years of continuous palawa culture are all at stake.
Until 23 December, two generous donors are matching every donation up to $50,000. This means you’ll have twice the impact to fund the important fight ahead for the integrity of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Will you donate today?
Development in World Heritage nature: the truth exposed.
The nature of lutruwita / Tasmania is like nothing else.
A quarter of this heart-shaped island is the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area: a landscape of rugged dolerite peaks, glacial-carved lakes, ancient vegetation and wondrous wildlife, like the threatened Tasmanian wedge-tail eagle.
The palawa people, luturuwita/Tasmania's Traditional Owners, have been connected to Country for tens of thousands of years. Because of its extraordinary cultural and natural values, this region is rated first among all World Heritage sites on Earth.
Yet even this greatest of natural wonders isn’t safe.
A landscape that meets 7 out 10 World Heritage criteria and is vital to life on the planet currently only has value to decision-makers if they can make money or win favours from it.

Supporters like you played a big role in the campaign that led to a fifth of lutruwita / Tasmania being recognised as a World Heritage Area in 1982. Together, Wilderness Society, supporters like you, and local communities have helped defend and expand the extraordinary Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area ever since.
Sadly, even the highest-rated World Heritage site on the planet isn’t safe from powerful vested interests, or from the Tasmanian government. In 2014, they launched a secretive and deeply-flawed Expression of Interest (EOI) process to invite development in the Wilderness World Heritage Area.
The EOI process is just the start of how Tasmania’s government is bending rules and defying global obligations to help out developers like Wild Drake.
Your support today will help Wilderness Society continue to hold our own against such a relentless opponent, including with ongoing legal support. But this is a make-or-break time.
Please join with Wilderness Society to make sure Tasmania’s irreplaceable World Heritage nature is safe in 2023, and for the future.
What will my donations do?
You’ll join tens of thousands of people, who refuse to let nature be traded for more corporate profit and fat political donations.
Your gift today will help;
-
Pay for Right to Information requests, to show how Tasmania’s government is watering down laws and dodging its global obligations.
-
Fund the costs of the ongoing legal work to defend the integrity of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Areas.
-
Support local communities to have a real say in the decision making process.
-
Advocate to fix the dodgy EOI process that is fast-tracking inappropriate development.
Wild Drake has seemingly limitless time and money, the backing of the Tasmanian government and an inexhaustible determination to exploit Tasmania’s Wilderness World Heritage Area for profit.
Your investment today will help Wilderness Society continue to hold our own against such relentless opponents, including with ongoing legal support. But this is a make-or-break time.
